Papers of Charles F. Morse, Lt.-Col. of the Mass. 2nd Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, composed primarily of letters written by Morse to members of his family. The letters, written from various posts throughout the southern states, describe camp life, military routine, battles, and campaigns, among them the battles of Chancellorsville, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Resaca, and the siege of Atlanta in 1864. Later papers contain letters written to Morse upon the publication of his Civil War letters and his account of the Battle of Gettysburg, many written by members of his regiment; and several papers related to Morse's later career in the railroad business, in particular with the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, and with the Kansas City Stock Yards Co. Correspondents include Charles F. Adams, Edward P. Alexander, George A. Thayer, and George L. Andrews.
